I wouldn’t be honest to the Bookwagon maxim of only selecting quality books we have read and loved, if ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’ was not included in our range. I adore this book. I was not aware of the Winn-Dixie supermarkets before reading it, but during a recent Florida road trip, I waved out to every one, hoping for a glimpse of a large, lolloping dog.
Opal Buloni, a Pollyanna-like character, little realises that the stray dog she rescues from her local Winn-Dixie supermarket will, in turn, rescue her grieving preacher father, and a host of other ill-sorted, lonely characters, in her new parish town. This wacky, weighty, warm and deservedly Newbery award winning story is a prize. Whether aloud on a French summer staircase with two little boys, or curled up alone on the sofa, I urge you to read ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’.
