Alan’s Big Scary Teeth

Within boldly coloured, gouache and collage back grounded illustrations, wide eyed characters live. They are made more wide eyed and reactive after Alan, who comes from a long line of scary alligators, has finished ‘…polishing his scales, sharpening his nails and brushing each of his big, scary teeth’ ready to begin his morning scaring….

However, Alan’s ‘Snap Snap Toothpaste’ hides a truth that no one in the animal kingdom, terrified by Alan, should ever discover – should they?

Jarvis is a treasure and a find. With witty visual asides, ‘Eau de Gator after shave?’, busy pictures, and really inventive, reader appealing ideas, he has shaken up the children’s picture book world, offering something a little more intelligent and bewitching. I love this ‘Alan’s Big Scary Teeth‘ and suggest your picture book readers will, too!

Alan’s Big Scary Teeth

The jungle animals are terrified of Alan’s Big ScaryTeeth. He has frogs in a frenzy and monkeys in a muddle. However, we learn the truth about these gnashes. Is it possible that Alan’s teeth have their own unexpected story? Furthermore, might Alan’s teeth be essential to him for a reason that’s rather embarrassing? It’s true that they keep things in the jungle running exactly as Alan’s always wanted them, with everyone doing as he bids. Therefore, how will the other animals discover the truth? What’s more, will they support or enjoy a good laugh?
Jarvis was awarded the V & A best illustrated book for this title. It seems that this story is gripping, well sequenced, original and highly entertaining. However, there’s something more. Rather like Mrs Mole, I’m Home!, we’re subsumed with the colours, which are rich, tropical and then multilayered. It means that it feels as though we’re enjoying a jungle experience!
However, what would we make of Alan’s Big Scary Teeth? Might we realise the truth ahead of the characters? Bookwagon recommends this picture book for reading aloud, laughing over together, getting to know well and gifting too. This is a truly satisfying reading experience! Snap, snap!
