Armadillo and Hare and the Flamingo Affair
Jeremy Strong, illustrate by Rebecca Bagley
(David Fickling Books)
Who could be making the ‘wonderful, magical- ‘song without words- that sort of feel there are words’? Both housemates are disturbed by the beautiful music. Thus we return to the Big Forest for Armadillo and Hare and the Flamingo Affair.
It seems that the music is so enticing as to draw Armadillo’s and Hare’s attention to find the source. Thereafter they arrive at the ‘edge of the lake‘ where the most ‘extraordinary- singer, dancer, prancer and performer extraordinaire’ appears. Not only do Flamingo’s legs stretch on forever, but she is arrayed in exotic costumes and seems to have everyone entranced. What’s more, she admires Armadillo’s cardigan. Yet, that particular garment is designed for its own, special story.
It seems as though Flamingo’s not the only interloper in the forest. What are the animals to do about Angry Bison? Armadillo’s advice to his long-eared friend, is to ‘keep out of his way’. However, Hare’s feeling is that this bison needs a lesson! What is he to do? Armadillo’s focus is on his vegetable patch and thereafter upon a competition. What’s more, there could be a ‘fabulous’ guest judge!
Jeremy Strong and Rebecca Bagley have created a superb addition to a beloved series. Armadillo and Hare and the Flamingo Affair inspired me to read passages aloud to the other bookseller. Not only is this story warm, familiar, witty and clever, but its empathy shines. This third title follows Armadillo and Hare and the Very Noisy Bear. Bookwagon recommends this story to share, for less confident chapter book readers, but also for any reader seeking an outstanding story.
