From haiku to rhyming couplets, dancing on the ceiling to daydreaming, weird contemplations about history to lyrical delights on the world. ‘Chicken on the Roof‘ is a delirious poetry book.
Matt Goodfellow doesn’t put a word wrong. After reading each poem, I felt like I wanted to revisit and linger. I could imagine reading this aloud, showing the poems, sharing and wondering. I have favourites; I love the respect according to the environment in poems like, ‘Storm Clouds’ and ‘Before’, while wanting to recite, ‘From the Land to the Sea’ with its rich emotion. I can imagine children picking up the rhythm and rhyme included in ‘Cousins’ and quickly repeating ‘Tommy’s Tummy’ or ‘Little Boat’. Magically, Hannah Asen’s illustrations match the mood and theme of each poem.
‘Chicken on the Roof‘ is a poetry book that would be enjoyed by readers aged from 7 or 8 years old, but equally, would be loved and respected by its adult readers. This is a wonderful title, one we are proud to share and sell.
