Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble

£12.99

Paul Cookson has selected magical poems with a wide variety of themes, styles and subjects that fascinate and delight with Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble.

Alongside popular poets like A.F. Harrold and Roger Stevens, we revisit Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s The Kraken- ‘Huge sponges of millennial growth and height// From many a wondrous grot and secret cell/ Unnumbered and enormous polypi/ Winnow with giant fins…’  Thereafter, we meet lesser known poets like Dannielle Viera who is suffering a Hatastrophe– ‘Although I tug and pull the hat/ Until my face turns red/ There is no way/ To make it stay/ It won’t sit on my head!

There are rhyming couplets, narratives and spells, word plays and narratives. Eilidh Muldoon’s pictures are beautiful, from their curlicued edges to glorious slate shadowed pictures.

Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble is a most satisfying selection of magical poems, ideal to dip into, read, recite and share!

Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble

Magical Poems

Chosen by Paul Cookson, illustrated by Eilidh Muldoon

(Bloomsbury)– hardback

Benjamin Zephaniah seeks ‘de magic poem/ It’s in de mind/ It’s in de skies… His is one chosen by Paul Cookson for Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble, a selection of magical poems.
There are humorous poems about ‘self-cleaning socks for long-distance runners’ or the perils of ‘asking a wizard to make [me] a sandwich’. Thereafter there is traditional poetry, such as Shakespeare’s Song of the Witches from Macbeth. I love discovering newer verse, and Paul Cookson has included many poems from poets unknown to me, like Jo Mularczyk, whose ‘The Cool Dragon‘ offers the story of Blaze, whose secret caused her shame.
There is such variety within the theme of magic, and Paul Cookson has researched zealously to share this variety. There are spells, such as James Carter’s ‘How to Turn Your Teacher Purple‘, to potions, like B.J. Lee’s ‘Witch’s Wishlist’ or Liz Brownlee’s ‘Magic Love Potion‘- ‘lip kiss prints peeled off of the edge of a glass‘.
Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble is a splendid selection to dip into, read and recite, share and enjoy. Bookwagon loves and recommends Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble highly.
