Good Night, Good Beach

Do you remember? Holidays of childhood? The sand brought indoors, the ‘hush-hushing‘ of the waves? Then again, the first shell you collect that builds a collection that extends the ‘salty smell‘?

Might there be a big moon that shines through the summer night sky, ahead of beaming, bright days? In fact, might these days offer wonder that slips beyond photographs to seem endless?

New Zealand maestra, Joy Cowley offers a spectacular picture book memoir in Good Night, Good Beach which is beautifully evoked by Hilary Jean Tapper’s pictures.

Altogether it means that Good Night, Good Beach is a glorious picture book of summer, beach holidays, family, friendship and freedom. Bookwagon suggests this picture book is an outstanding choice for reading aloud, sharing and loving, rereading and knowing well, and gifting.

Good Night, Good Beach

Joy Cowley & Hilary Jean Tapper

(Gecko Press)

Shall we take a familiar summer story? To a ‘creaky old bed with rumpled sheet, sunburned skin and sandy feet‘? In fact could we be journeying to memories, something lived and beloved, with family, friends, outline and summertime?
Beloved award winning New Zealand children’s writer, Joy Cowley offers a paean to the summer holiday. What’s more, there’s more than a nod to the New Zealand beach cabin, or ‘bach‘. To that end, we’ve the sand through the floorboards, ‘sea at the door’, and then the big sky through which shines the ‘moon at the window’. What’s more, we can hear the ‘waves hush-hushing on the shore’. Isn’t this the summer for which we long? Furthermore, don’t we build up our collection from ‘one white shell‘ to ‘sea-washed glass‘? Aren’t there always late nights, games and puzzles, too? It seems the rhyming text is beautifully evoked by Hilary Jean Tapper’s sunwashed pictures too.
Bookwagon suggests that Good Night, Good Beach is a beautiful picture book to share on summer evenings especially. Then again, it’s a wonderful story to quote and recite, to linger over and gift. In fact, Bookwagon offers that this beautiful book, Good Night, Good Beach, rather like Seagull Seagull is a classic picture book that needs to be read and known and loved truly.
