Grimms’ Fairy Tales

£12.99

Elli Woollard and Marta Altés retell five of Grimm’s Fairy Tales beautifully. We begin with Little Red Cap, revisit The Elves and the Shoemaker, shudder through Hansel and Gretel, cheer The Musicians of Bremen and linger over Cinderella.

Not only are the illustrations bright, fresh, fascinating and satisfying, but Elli Woollard’s rhyming storytelling a joy! For example, with The Elves and the Shoemaker, we’re treated to- ‘- It’s midnight, and look, we’re in luck!/ For there in the room, fetching tools from the shelves,/ Were two little skittering, jittering elves!/ As rapid of flashes of lightning they scurried,/ They sewed and they hammered, they glued and the hurried…’ We sense the magical excitement! What’s more, in this instalment, Marta Altés draws the reader’s gaze right into a closeup of the industrious pair!

Then again, we join the horror of Cinderella’s lot as her stepmother and stepsisters overwhelm her life. Therefore, ‘Was this stepmother nice? You can bet she was not!/ She was horrid and nasty and wicked as rot!/ Even worse were her daughters, two spoilt little slobs, ‘Girl!’ they would yell at her, ‘Do all our jobs!’

What brilliant storytelling! Altogether, Bookwagon loves this classic version of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. What’s more, we recommend this book for gifting, sharing and treasuring.

Description

Grimms’ Fairy Tales

Retold by Elli Wollard, illustrated by Marta Altés

(Pan Macmillan)

Elli Woollard delights us with her retelling of  Aesop’s Fables, alongside her picture books and poetry. With Grimms’ Fairy Tales, it’s poetic devices she turns to in her interpretations. Therefore, Little Red Cap (aka Little Red Riding Hood) is introduced as ‘a girl who was happy from morning till night,/ And because she was playful and sunny and smile/ All the people there treasured that dear little child’… Thereafter, we wait for her to take up the basket with fresh baked cake and ‘elderflower wine’ and head out to her ‘old grandma‘ who ‘has grown very poorly‘. What’s more, we anticipate her putting on her ‘cherished- small velvet hat’.
Then again, we enjoy less familiar traditional tales, such as The Musicians of Bremen. Therein, the ‘five weak old animals‘ turned out by their owners, regroup on a journey to ‘Bremen, a find little town‘ where they plan to make ‘music’. However the chicken , donkey, dog and cat dispense of the robbers who’ve holed up in a house along their route. What’s more, they discover comfort together. Might the journey provide their destination?
Bookwagon suggests that this splendid version of five Grimms’ Fairy Tales is ideal for bedtime reading, sharing, knowing and gifting. This is a beautiful title, elevated by the expressive illustrations of Bookwagon favourite Marta Altés.
