I Will Haunt This

£7.99

Just look at the juxtaposition between memory, the supernatural and the living? Look at the warmth, shown through Chris Riddell’s quite breathtaking illustrations, moving from sepia, to ‘newsprint‘ to Christmas stocking- footed, to that offered the ghost!

Bookwagon adores Viviane Schwarz’s picture books. There is such rich imagination, endless possibilities, twists and turns. Thereafter, where can the little ghost find that offers him a safe place? After all, the errant cat has broken his vase, and now he needs some other place to haunt. While the jumper Grandad knitted the girl is formed with love and comfort, it’s not the best place. After all, it’s too soft! Where can he go? Somewhere with ‘warm memories’ where he might watch people make things?

Then again, what if the girl feels that she cannot make things, that what she makes doesn’t ‘come out right’. Can the little ghost hear something in her scribbled out drawing? Something that needs to ‘come out’?

What a fantastic picture book! We love and recommend I Will Haunt This to all readers, for reading aloud, loving, sharing and holding close.

Description

I Will Haunt This

Viviane Schwarz, with Chris Riddell

(Walker Books)

When the cat knocks over the heavy vase in the attic, it releases the ghost. However it is a small ghost, and then soft. Where might it go? After all, it needs ‘a hiding place’? It seems that the house is ‘bright and tidy, full of shiny new things’ rather than offering somewhere for a ghost. Thereafter, what about a ‘lumpy, bumpy jumper, cosy and baggy and warm’? It seems that this jumper is knitted with hopes. The ghost is certain, ‘I Will Haunt This’.
However, what about the girl who loves this ‘big, old jumper‘? After all, it was knitted for her by her grandpa! Is it possible that the girl and the ghost might be friends? Could the ghost be encouraged to find another hiding place, ‘a proper home’ rather than the jumper? Somewhere with warm memories? Then again, doesn’t this ghost love making things, and wouldn’t the girl love to make things? Can they help each other?
Viviane Schwarz is such an inspiring and generous writer and illustrator. Here, her inviting narrative is illustrated by former laureate, Chris Riddell. We love the line drawings, the juxtaposition of segmented, framed pictures with step in illustrations and then the deft employment of colour. Like this writer’s Sometimes You Find a Dragon, I Will Haunt This is encouraging and positive. It’s a book to read aloud, share and love. We are so proud to welcome this wonderful story aboard.
