Luma and the Pet Dragon

When Luma wakes up on the morning of her seventh birthday, she is excited as she knows that today she will be getting a new puppy! when she goes to the rescue centre however, there are no puppies left and she is crestfallen. Luma has no idea just how wonderful and extraordinary her birthday will yet turn out.

For today is the day she will meet Timir – a real talking dragon. Timir only talks when Luma is around. When anyone else is there, he becomes an ordinary grey puppy with a fluffy tail, who loves chasing squirrels and bouncing on trampolines.  Everyone but Luma (and her wise grandmother) assume Timir to be a scruffy male puppy.

It’s a big secret to keep – and Luma’s clever cousin Arjun is soon suspicious of the peculiar puppy, who doesn’t quite behave like any other dog. Luckily Luma’s grandmother – Nani – is there to help, and to Luma’s surprise, Nani might just know a little dragon magic of her own.

Luma and the Pet Dragon

Leah Mohammed

(Welbeck Publishing Group)

Luma is enormously disappointed when, following a mix-up at the rescue centre, she is unable to collect a puppy on her seventh birthday. However, when she visits Nani, her grandmother, she is amazed to discover a talking baby dragon called Timir hiding in the garden. Luma is desperate to keep him but worries that Mum won’t agree to such an unconventional pet. Only Luma and her grandmother know that Timir is a dragon.  To everyone else, he is a scruffy dog.  This is because Timir transforms into a puppy when others are around, and only Luma and Nani understand him when he talks.
Timir is cute but destructive, and refuses to do as he is told. Luma is concerned that someone will discover his true identity.  This concern gets worse when her inquisitive cousin, Arjun, comments that he doesn’t behave much like a puppy. Luma takes him to puppy class so he can learn to blend in with other dogs, but things don’t quite go according to plan!
This book is the first in a series and contains two short stories about Luma and Timir. Their magical adventures are accompanied by lovely illustrations by Loretta Schauer, which bring the characters to life. The stories are full of mischief and mayhem and are ideal as a first chapter book read.
