On Your Marks, Get Set…Gold!

A Fact-Filled, Funny Guide to Every Olympic Sport

Written by Scott Allen, with illustrations by Antoine Corbineau

(Nosy Crow)

On Your Marks, Get Set…Gold is the indispensable guide to the Olympic Games and every Olympic sport.  Along the way, you will learn a heap of fascinating and quirky facts.  For example, did you know that in water polo, one type of foul is called a “brutality” and it’s possible to score a ‘donut’?  This reviewer was surprised to learn that beards and moustaches are banned in boxing.  These are just a few of the unexpected information you will find in this great book.  Of course, the book digs into the origins of the Olympics and also covers sports included unique to the Paralympics, such as wheelchair rugby and bocks.
The guide is organised into several sections including ballgames, taking aim, water sports, combat sports and equestrian events.  Furthermore, it offers ‘history bits’ about every sport and amusing anecdotes about some of the greatest practitioners of the sports as well as mini-profiles.
The text by Scott Allen has an amusing tone, meaning that the subjects remain interesting throughout.  Moreover, the full colour illustrations by Antoine Corbineau perfectly compliment the text.
Bookwagon is delighted to stock several books about sport.  Ancient Games for example is a superb guide to the origins of many sports, while Sportopedia and Let’s Play Sports are excellent and thorough general guides.
