Phoebe Dupree is Coming to Tea!

Louie the dog has been bathed and brushed and directed that he should ‘greet Phoebe with one gentle paw’. Thereafter the table is set, the china is prepared, a tea of tarts and éclairs finalised. What’s more the perfect company is joining in, ‘two bears and a doll’. After all, it ‘has to be perfect, from beginning to end- or Phoebe will not want to visit again’. Imagine… Phoebe Dupree is Coming to Tea!

Phoebe is perfect. She ‘sings like a bird’, is ‘speedy’ and ‘smart’. Furthermore, ‘she’s equally brilliant at science and art’. Therefore the stakes are high!

We read about the special guest and watch all the careful preparations. Thereafter, we are there when Phoebe arrives and when tea is brought to the table…

Linda Ashman’s rhyming text is a treat. We’re bound in the excited anticipation, watching the event unfold. Thereafter, the tea party bright pictures of warmth and delight created by Alea Marley convey this tea party wonderfully.

Phoebe Dupree is Coming to Tea! is a delightful picture book to read together and thereafter to read and know alone. Bookwagon loves and recommends this charming title.

Phoebe Dupree is Coming to Tea!

Linda Ashman, illustrated by Alea Marley

The table is set, the company’s ready, and even Louie is prepared, for Phoebe Dupree is Coming to Tea! There are éclairs and tarts and a real china tea set. What’s more, there are flowers too. It seems that everything must be perfect for this guest. After all, she is ‘speedy and smart’ and ‘equally brilliant at science and art’. Furthermore, she can ‘sing like a bird’! It seems as though this visitor is ‘as perfect as perfect can be‘. No wonder Louie must not drool or dig, bark or lunge!
Thereafter, what might possibly go wrong when everything is so carefully prepared?
Linda Ashman offers a perfectly joyous rhyming text. It seems we understand how important this tea date is and the awe in which the guest is held. Therefore, we hold our breaths and hope for the best. It seems as though we’re lined up with the company- ‘two bears and a doll’– also. Furthermore, Alea Marley’s elongated, tea party bright illustrations build the expectation perfectly. The reverence of tea is always something to realise, as shown in The Bear Who Did. However Phoebe Dupree is Coming to Tea! is a whole different level. Just watch and read what happens! What a teatime treat!
