Is it possible for Kizzy and Jakob to lead a group of scared children, hiding since their families were destroyed by the Nazis, to safety? When Heinz presented Kizzy and Jakob with their plan, it was to rescue rare Czechoslovakian horses. Although the pair were unhappy that they would be accompanying the man who’d turned them into the Nazis during their Flight from terror, they knew they were the horses’ only hope. However, what they discover upon their arrival is nothing they’ve been led to expect…

It means that their survival and then that of the disparate children, and rare horses is down to the pair of them. Although Kizzy and Jakob are resourceful and courageous, the last days of the war are uncertain. Not only do they have to avoid Nazi enclaves, but it seems Russian troops will see the horses as a food supply. Then again, the children who join them are ‘lost’, emotionally and physically fraught and suspicious. Kizzy and Jakob will have to rely on their wits, ‘silent prayers’, Heinz’s faith in them, and then the determination that this plan must work.

Bookwagon recommends Safe to emotionally aware, curious middle grade readers. we love its considered setting and understanding, the quality of its research and then its message too. What a brave and stirring story.

Safe

Vanessa Harbour

(Firefly Press)

Despite the Countess’s best efforts Kizzy is not suited to being a lady. In fact her experiences before meeting Jakob, and then with him, have inspired her to want more than this. What’s more, her heart is with Pluto, with the horses that she, Jakob and Heinz helped take Flight from the Nazis.
Therefore, she is keen to accept Heinz’s plan that she joins Jacob on a mission to rescue rare breeds of Czechoslovakian horses from Russian troops. However both she and Jakob mistrust their adult companion, who’d betrayed them to the Nazis on an earlier collaboration. Should they believe his assertion to Heinz? Is this plan Safe?
Then again, what of their destination? A schloss to the Kinsky family? What are the sounds that the children hear from the deserted barn? Furthermore, how many horses are they expected to lead to safety- really?
Vanessa Harbour creates the drama, courage and uncertainty of a broken time realistically. We appreciate Kizzy’s fears, responsibility and grief, alongside agonising over the plight of the discovery she and Jakob make. Then we’re on tenterhooks as Kizzy and Jakob plot the return of the horses across enemy lines.
Safe is a stirring story that we recommend highly to our curious, emotionally aware, empathetic middle grade readers.
