The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza

The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza is the hilarious debut in Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris’s new space adventure series.   When the moon is being eaten by a bunch of cosmic rats, who else would you call to help other than a cat? Our feline hero is launched to its rescue mission on a hyper-intelligent space shuttle but we soon discover  there is a stowaway: robot LOZ 4000.  LOZ is tired of its sole purpose as a toenail clipper and it is determined to help Cat save the day.

Upon reaching the moon, they are greeted by the Moon Queen, who tells them they must travel to the dark side of the moon to stop the invading rodents. The trio’s journey is picaresque and a comedic delight.  They meet the cranky Man in the Moon, underground surfing caterpillar-like creatures, an affectionate whale, talking trees, and a host of even more wacky and weird lunar beings.  The First Cat in Space remains essentially silent, except with the occasional miaow, but wears a permanently grumpy expression.  However, cat is a true warrior and proves the hero alongside LOZ.

The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza

Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris

The First Cat in Space is the first instalment of a very funny new graphic novel series for younger readers.  Mac Barnett is one of our favourite picture book makers and this foray into graphic novels is therefore most welcome.
Something terrible is happening in the skies!  Rats are eating the Moon!  There’s only one hero for the job, a bold and fearsome beast bio-engineered in a secret lab to be the moon’s saviour and Earth’s last hope! Our hero is a cat! Moreover, it is a cat who will be blasted into space!  Most importantly, our hero cat loves pizza.  Accompanied by the imperious Moon Queen and LOZ 4000, a toenail-clipping robot, the First Cat in Space sets out on a perilous journey across a fantastic lunar landscape in a quest to save the world.
Will these unlikely heroes save the moon in time? Can a toenail-clipping robot find its purpose in the vast universe? And will the First Cat in Space ever eat some pizza?  These are some of the questions to be answered in this tale of derring-do in space.  On their journey, Cat, Moon Queen and LOZ 4000 will encounter a bizarre and wacky cast of characters, including a most unexpected villain.  Will Cat ever get to eat its space pizza though?
Bookwagon is pleased to stock several of Mac Barnett’s books, including Sam and Dave Dig a Hole and Extra Yarn.  What’s more, this talented duo collaborated on the breathtaking picture book, A Polar Bear in the Snow. You can also follow the adventures of Cat and his chums in the YouTube series.
