Description
The Lights that Dance in the Night
Yuval Zommer
(Oxford University Press)– hardback
It seems that flippers clap and bills touch as the animal kingdom proclaim The Lights that Dance in the Night. After all, these are aurora polaris, Northern Lights, that captivate and mystify. Thereafter, it seems this is their dance, a ‘celebration- as specks of dust [blow] to Earth from the Sun’.
It seems this light sensation tumbles ‘through clouds- winds and snowstorms’, bonding closely, staying strong, facing off the ‘wintry weather’. What’s more, the stream shines and gleams across the nighttime skies, bringing ‘joy to polar bears,. and happiness to Arctic hares’. The light force dances further, sashaying and swing for Arctic fox and musk ox, too. Then again, how might wolf pack or wild cats react to this show? What of reindeer herds or Arctic people?
It seems that Yuval Zommer whips us into a paroxysm of delight with his picture books, from his descriptive rhyme, element of nature study, to this soaring, vibrant pictures. As with A Thing Called Snow, we are captivated and delighted. Altogether, The Lights that Dance in the Night demands to be read together, during wintry bedtimes, gifted, shared and loved.
