The River That Flows Beside Me

Charlotte Guillain and Jo Empson

(Words and Pictures)

The River That Flows Beside Me is a superb ‘concertina’ picture book that follows the course of a river from its mountain source to the sea.  We take a journey alongside the river past gorges, waterfalls, farms, docksides and through the city.  Along the way we see nature in its magnificence, including bears, eagles, salmon, otters and dolphins.  We also see forests and lakes and geographical features such as oxbow lakes.  The range of nature, geographical, topographical and water features is comprehensive and absorbing.
The book also includes how humans use the river.  Leisure pursuits in the upper reaches and, as we near the towns and cities through which it flows, for industry and transport.  The text by renowned non-fiction picture book author Charlotte Guillain is clear and entertaining.  Similarly, the illustrations by Jo Empson are simply stunning.
Bookwagon is proud to stock companion books in this series, including The Street Beneath My Feet and The Skies Above My Eyes.  All of these books are hugely impressive and a must for every home and school library.  Charlotte Guillain’s web site is well worth a visit to take in the huge range of her work.
