The Weight of a Thousand Feathers

The Weight of a Thousand Feathers‘ is an angry and provocative novel that questions and explores the lengths we go to for the ones we love. Bobby Seed is a carer for his ailing mother and he also looks out for his younger brother.  He gets little help from the authorities and little time for himself. One day, his Mum asks him the unthinkable question – can Bobby help his Mum?

Despite the premise, this book is never depressing, but always thought-provoking. The characters, and the relationships, are brilliantly realised.  This is without doubt one of the best books I have read, not only for Bookwagon.

‘The Weight of a Thousand Feathers‘ is a challenging book, dealing with adult themes, through adult situations and language. It is destined to be a classic of the young adult genre, recommended as a selection for older readers aged from 14 years of age.

The Weight of a Thousand Feathers

Brian Conaghan

(Bloomsbury) – hardback

‘The Weight of a Thousand Feathers’ is without doubt one of the best books I have read. It is an angry, provocative, profound and beautiful story about a young man struggling to hold family and routine together for his younger brother. Meanwhile, he is primary carer for his invalid mother. From this potentially depressing scenario, emerges a warm and witty story, with engrossing characters and relationships.
