‘Tis the Season

What about a 3-D model Advent calendar, created so beautifully and strongly that it’s destined to be brought out every year? What’s more, imagine untying the red ribbon to encounter the first poem, to be shared, perhaps, on December 1st. Then again, this perfect construction offers flaps to lift across each Christmas week within every double page. What magic!

Furthermore, the poems are various and wonderful, from Christmas classics, songs and rhymes, to newer works and then from contemporary and award-winning poets.

There are Christmas scenes including trees and reindeer, snowmen and crisp frosty fields. The light is bright and the feeling warm and exhilarating.

Bookwagon loves ‘Tis the Season. This is an outstanding creation, one that we suggest is a thoughtful gift and then a piece destined to become a tradition. We recommend this beautiful book highly to every reader.

‘Tis the Season

National Trust

Richard Jones

(Nosy Crow)

‘Tis the Season deserves to become a Christmas tradition. Richard Jones the creator of such magnificent picture books as Little Bear, has created a ‘lift-the-flap Advent Calendar full of Christmas poems‘.
Thereafter, we untie the ribbon to read the first offering, for December 1st, The North Wind. What’s more, we’ve a classic, Winter Ducks, from Russell Hoban to read on December 4th. Furthermore, on that particular poem, as with those on December 2nd and 3rd, we’ve flaps to pull down and peep through. (This Bookwagon reader does not want to spoil the surprise!)
There’s a variety of poetry, from haiku to free verse, ode to narrative. There are poems, such as The Holly and the Ivy (December 12th) that have been put to music to become favourite seasonal songs. What’s more there are new poems from less known poets, from writers beyond our shoes, alongside award winners, including Coral Rumble. Then again, there are classics such as we reach at this time of year, like Christina Rossetti’s A Bunch of Holly.
However throughout, we’ve the magnificent construction and illustrations of this work. We know that Richard Jones is an outstanding craftsperson whose art is breathtaking. Here, within a 3-D construction, there is such pin point accuracy and wonder, surprise and delight. Altogether it means that ‘Tis the Season is the Advent Calendar beyond any other. Bookwagon loves and recommends this beautiful work.
