Trailblazers: Simone Biles

We might imagine that we know some of the difficulties that great athletes have endured. However in Trailblazers: Simone Biles, we learn so much more. Not only do we read her biography, of her unsettled start, from mother to foster family to grandparents, Ohio to Texas, repeated, but then of her early, and accidental start in gymnastics.

Then we learn about her innate strength and ability, alongside her diagnosis of ADHD, something shared with other elite athletes, including Michael Phelps, and Michael Jordan.

However, this title explains the history of gymnastics, and then the regulations and features of the sport, alongside the progress expected of gymnasts to reach the sort of level achieved by Simone Biles. There is such focus demanded. Then again, there is such focus upon them too. For someone like Simone Biles, with such spectacular skill, there was negative attention, alongside setback and the need for support.

Bookwagon is utterly absorbed by this superstar athlete’s story. We recommend reading Trailblazers: Simone Biles to all older, mature, middle grade readers.

(Little Tiger Press)

Trailblazers: Simone Biles is a comprehensive discovery of one of the world’s most famous and inspiring gymnasts. Thereafter we journey from Simone’s early life in Ohio. It seems she envied the food of a neighbour’s cat, while she and her siblings were starving and in difficulty. Thankfully, fostering and thereafter, the intervention of her grandparents, changed Simone’s life and destiny. However, even from an early age, it seems that Simone’s athleticism drew attention and surprise.
However, the fact that Simone’s family situation meant moving to live with her grandparents in Texas turned up a fortunate coincidence. Her grandparents’ area included Bannon’s Gymnastix, a ‘world class gymnastics training facility’. What’s more, it was here that Simone’s coach for so many years, worked.
Alongside Simone’s biography, a fascinating exploration of adversity, setback, strength and invention, we’ve a gymnastics glossary. Not only do we learn about gymnastic styles, stars and skills, but then about this sports’ history. Then again, we learn about the development of the sport, the national and international competitions, What’s more, Trailblazers: Simone Biles includes information about the history of the Olympic Games. This feature follows on from On Your Marks, Get Set…Gold!, perfectly!
Bookwagon is absorbed. Not only do we learn about a world famous athlete, but about her setting, trailblazing path and legacy, too. We recommend this book highly!
