What to Do, Pernickety Boo?

£7.99

It’s summer holiday time and Jimjam, Sylvie Moonshine’s cat, and Pernickety Boo’s best friend, is miserable. He never goes on holiday. Pernickety Boo suggests Jimjam could prove that he’s dependable, Then again, what if there’s an opportunity through two old canvases left outside Sylvie Moonshine’s house, to prove Jimjam’s creativity?

This effort results in a kerfuffle. It might be all right to judge things by twenty whiskers, but not when you’re a ginger cat, negotiating a road through the passenger window of Georgie’s car! Then again, the fact that this cat’s  judgement is  difficult to understand might lead the umbrella driving the car to a problem with braking, during which a stolen tiara is somehow ‘collected’ by this driver and navigator.

The thieves want to reclaim the tiara, which Sylvie thinks is part of her dressing up. Is it possible these two baddies might track down Sylvie, her granny, Billy Turpin’s granny, Pernickety Boo and Jimjam to a circus? Thereafter, that they might try their best to retrieve the tiara while the truth about Pernickety Boo’s enchantment is revealed? Who can wriggle this umbrella and his family out of this one? Surely not a bully who can talk cat?

What to Do, Pernickety Boo?

Sally Gardner, illustrated by Chris Mould

(HarperCollins)

What to Do, Pernickety Boo? After all, it all begins with this enchanted umbrella driving Georgie’s car out of the garage, but with the garage, and unintentionally getting in the way of a white van. (After all, how can you see through the windscreen with a garage in the way? Then again, how can a ginger cat navigate successfully through the passenger window?)The fact that this van is a getaway van, rushing from a robbery of Princess Louises’ tiara, isn’t realised by either of the two in Georgie’s car. Then again, they’re unaware that they’ve managed to ‘collect’ the tiara too. However, the thieves are not!
How can two thieves end up at the very circus that Granny and Sylvie Moonshine are attending? Then again, that these thieves might know that they’re there, alongside this enchanted umbrella and his best ginger cat friend?
Bookwagon loves Pernickety Boo, the first book in this delightful series. Like that title, this is full of warmth and friendship, understanding and mishap. Then again, Sally Gardner is a masterly storyteller, whose story, here is beautifully interpreted in Chris Mould‘s illustrations. (Will we ever see such a fine umbrella head as that sported by our titular character?)
Bookwagon recommends What to Do, Pernickety Boo? so highly to our readers.
