You Can’t Let an Elephant Drive a Digger

You Can’t Let an Elephant Drive a Digger for it’s certain that he’d be too big to move the controls. Thereafter, it’s a daft notion to employ a snake to wake you up, or let a kangaroo use your loo. If ‘an octopus helped you get dressed’, while ‘she’d have fun- you won’t look your best.’ Meanwhile, wouldn’t you think that ‘should a wolf read your bedtime story/ He’ll choose a story both gruesome and gory’.

Patricia Cleveland-Peck offers such sound, if wildly imaginative, advice in her rhyming picture book. David Tazzyman emphasises the possibilities hilariously. The scene that depicts the likely outcome of sharing a bunk with a skunk will have readers laughing out loud, for example!

Finally, the conclusion where the animals cry, ‘What can we do?/ We just want to help but you/ won’t let us TRY.‘ What an invitation! What do you suggest? Where might we enjoy the company of animals? There is such scope, joy and imagination in this superb picture book, as in the other titles within this wonderful series.

You Can’t Let an Elephant Drive a Digger

Patricia Cleveland- Peck, illustrated by David Tazzyman

You Can’t Let an Elephant Drive a Digger for it’s likely that he’d be too big for the controls. It’s not a great idea ‘to let a polar bear cut your hair’. After all, ‘she’ll paw you and claw you and grab your hair tight/ Then snippety- snip- oh dear, what a fright!’  Would you allow a snake to awaken you in the mornings? Or what about taking a bath with a shark? Surely you’d ‘jump out QUICK- if she should offer to wash your back….
Patrica Cleveland- Peck’s raucously imaginative rhyming situations are realised brilliantly by David Tazzyman’s illustrations. Going to the loo with a kangaroo is a tour-de-force (as well as being unadvisable due to the ‘bounce off the toilet‘) The vertical structure is like opening the loo door to a shocking scene!
You Can’t Let an Elephant Drive a Digger is part of a glorious series that includes You Can’t Take an Elephant on the Bus and You Can’t Call an Elephant in an Emergency. We suggest these books are essential for bedtime reading!
