Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth

Oliver Jeffers

(Harper Collins)- hardback

The birth of his son provoked Oliver Jeffers into building this guidebook of encounters and explanations. Thereafter, we travel from the tree outside the window, to the world beyond. Then again, we encounter family members, to the neighbourhood and then people beyond. It seems there is a wealth of wonder to experience.  In fact, there’s so much to contemplate and choose in this world! Just ponder over all the possibilities…

It seems that Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth is a love story. It feels as though the writer is directing our gaze, alongside his newborn son’s, to the potential of life. Therefore we feel encouraged and restored. What’s more, it is laden with as many questions as it is facts, for isn’t every person’s experience their own? Should their choices be their own too, even if there are others who’ve trod before them? Its philosophy makes Bookwagon consider that this title is worthy of a place at home and school. What’s more, it is ageless- there are discoveries for adults and children alike. Finally, Bookwagon welcomes its companion piece, What We’ll Build wherein, we step further, with purpose.
