The Perfect Shot is the second book in Eve Ainsworth’s excellent series based on the remarkable story of the Dick, Kerr Ladies football team.  This pioneering team became hugely popular during and after World War 1 and its story deserves to be told.

With the end of the war having being declared, star player Hettie’s brother Freddie returns from the trenches.  He should be relieved, but his personal war has only just begun. He is still haunted by nightmares and guilt about a mistake he believes led to a comrade’s death. His sister Hattie is fully involved in running the girls’ team, so Freddie tries to distract himself by helping her.  His love of photography gives him the opportunity to become their unofficial photographer.

Can the introduction of a new key player, Jessie – a brave heroic woman – help Freddie to face his demons? He also has to repair his relationship with his Dad. The team get the chance of a domestic and international tour against the French Ladies team. Freddie finds he is on a journey of his own, facing up to his mistakes and taking a step to correct them.

Right under his nose, the Dick, Kerr Girls team offer the lesson that team work, communication and friendship can overcome just about anything.  Will Freddie learn this lesson and overcome his fears?
