There’s a perfect day at the seaside ahead, with ‘the best ice cream ever‘ to look forward to alongside triumphant  sandcastle building pierce the sky! This sky is blue while the cliffs are white and it seems the boy and his Grandad have the beach to themselves. This is the perfect day for ‘an ice cream‘ a ‘swim in the sea‘ and thereafter to discover ‘pirate treasure‘.

However, what if the perfect spot on this perfect day might reveal something unexpected? Could it be that when it’s time to swim  the grandfather and boy discover ‘a baby seal‘ that’s ‘all tangled up‘? Of course they must ‘help it’! However, this help requires untangling netting, borrowing a boat and thereafter taking ‘the seal home‘. Is it possible that after sailing the seven seas through storms, there might be ‘Land ahoy!‘ with seal parents anxiously awaiting the return of their pup? Furthermore, might this adventure lead to disoveries beneath the sea for the boy and his Grandad of a ‘shipwreck‘ and thereafter that the seals might show them ‘their pirate treasure‘?

Bookwagon pores through the precious wonder, imagination and possibilities of Found. Sam Usher’s picture books are so special, filled with hope, treasure, kindness and wonder. Not only is the direct text seemingly simple and obstacle- free, but his illustrations are rich with inspiration, clarity and joy. (Templar Books)

Imagine awakening to realise that on this day you’re ‘going to the beach‘? Then again, what if this day is to include ‘rock-pooling‘ and building ‘the best sandcastles in the world‘? Might there be ice creams, swimming in the sea and pirate treasure too? Then again, what if you Found something very precious that needs your help to return it to its home? Furthermore, what if that return inspires a journey of such wonder and discovery?
Bookwagon beloved writer/ illustrator Sam Usher presents the fourth in a quartet of picture book stories. These include Lost, Free and Wild. Like the previous three titles, we take an adventure with the boy and his grandfather that stretches credulity. However, this is more about possibilities and their relationship, alongside the wonders of the world. Therefore, they build a most magnificent sand castle, while we know that this ice-cream is undoubtedly ‘the best I’d ever eaten‘.
Then again, we’re familiar with this situation, from the way the older figure’s trousers are rolled up to the white cliffs of Englishness. Furthermore, Sam Usher’s storytelling is uncontrived, so that there’s a direct text alongside perfect pen and ink illustrations in the style of his hero, Sir Quentin Blake. Altogether, from the moment we open the first page, and the boy opens his eyes, to a swim of fairytales, Found is magical, glorious and quite essential reading fare.
