Clang!

£7.99

What happens if you’ve lost Penguin? If you’ve searched in all the usual places, including under the bed, and then ‘in the pond‘ but there’s no sign? It might be that Grandad takes his torch and you step downstairs to examine ‘the old bath- the tangled-up clothes dryer and in the dressing up box‘. However if there’s no sign of her at all, might it be time to set sail across the ocean?

You’ll need to ‘bash- and clang-, knot- and string-‘ alongside ironing the tea towels and ‘splic[ing] the mainbrace‘ Thereafter you’ll hit the oceans on a desperate adventure. It seems there are pirates and submarines and icebreakers ahead. Yet Penguin? Where might she be?

Bookwagon loves Sam Usher’s style evident in every picture book to which he’s contributed. It’s deft, light, beautiful and so animated. Then again, within his series with the boy and Grandad, we step into realms of imaginative possibilities, wonder, and adventure. It feels as though we’re aboard, examining maps and compasses, completely committed to the course.

We love Clang! We recommend this wonderful picture book to every reader. What’s more, we implore you to get to know the other adventures, too.

Clang!

Sam Usher

(Templar Publishing)

Propellor, Current Sensor Meter, TV Camera… it seems the boy and Grandad are building something. Last time that happened there was a Zoom! to a space rescue. This time there’s a Clang!
It all begins with the loss of Penguin. Despite searching everywhere, including ‘under the bed/ and in the pond’ then ‘in the old bath,/ under the tangled-up clothes dryer’, she’s not to be seen. It seems ‘There’s one place [they] haven’t tried- across the ocean!‘ Thereafter there isn’t ‘a moment to lose‘. They’ll need to bash and knot and string and splce the mainbrace. Thereafter they’ll need to ‘set sail for the open ocean’.
Sam Usher‘s picture books about the boy and Grandad are exceptional. Not only do we step into adventures of possibility and wonder, but the visual narrative is light, expansive and soul soaring. It feels as though we’re launched into these places, that we’re upon these wonderful adventures.
Thereafter, we encounter pirates, submarines alongside sailing ‘through mist, and fog and storms‘ However what might happen should we meet up with an ice breaker that leads us toward… penguin?
Bookwagon cannot recommend Clang! highly enough. We trust that the adventures for the boy and Grandad – and we readers – continue…
