Fearless Fairy Tales

£9.99

You’ve heard of Gretel and Hansel, no doubt? Or the Princess and the Peashooter, who lived in Crystal Palace? When the latest trend to shoot peas comes around, Zareen is desperate fo show her new treasure to ‘all her friends‘. Yet things are never what they seem in Fearless Fairy Tales, and Zareen’s encounter with the peashooter could lead to a fierce debate.

There is no debate offered by power hungry Trumplestiltskin who condemns the King and his daughter Marla to the tower to spin gold, unless they reveal his real name. That might be a problem for Mouldysocks, who learns a lesson when his adventures in the Three Bears’ home leads to carnage. Has his boat sunk?

Konnie Huq and James Kay’s tales are imaginative, satisfying, clever and very, very funny. I found myself reading them aloud to the other bookseller, enjoying the twists, turns and wit. Furthermore, Rikin Parekh’s pictures are truly descriptive and enlightening. Bookwagon loves Fearless Fairy Tales and recommends it highly to homes and schools.

Fearless Fairy Tales

Konnie Huq & James Kay, illustrated by Rikin Parekh

(Piccadilly Press)

Are you prepared for Fearless Fairy Tales? Stories such as Sleeping Brainy who is so outraged by the hiring of a royal tutor that she conjures ‘a cunning plan from thin air‘? Or perhaps you’d enjoy Jack and the Baked Bean Stalk who awakened from a Trumplestiltskin nightmare to discover a slimy orange plant climbing up to the sky? Where might it lead? Who is the giant stranger in Grandad’s allotment?
Then again, there’s Trumplestiltskin himself. This ‘angry little man‘ has turned a near fluorescent orange as a result of his love of colouring and fast foods. Furthermore, his love of gold and power has him locking Marla and the king into the ‘deepest dungeon’.
Fearless Fairy Tales has hints of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes and other clever revisiting of traditional tales. Yet these stories are fierce, funny and furious. They are contemporary, witty and right on point. As ever Rikin Parekh’s pictures play up the ridicule, humour and imagination, as we’ve come to enjoy with his illustrations as in This Book Has Alpacas and Bears.
This is a book to read, reread, share, laugh over and treasure. Bookwagon delights in Fearless FairyTales.
